Each painting I work on evolves into a world of its own. Initially I aim to create a composition that is pleasing and invites the viewer into the world of the painting. Every painting is unique and each one has its own lessons. When painting en plein air I am fascinated with the light on the landscape. I try to capture the season, time of day and how the light highlights the forms as it dances throughout the canvas.

Certain paintings are like moments in a film for me. Under The Olive Tree was painted from a quick photo I took of two musicians sharing a joyful moment in the bright sunlight of a Jerusalem afternoon. It was the marriage of their joy and the incredible sun washed streets of the ancient city, the cool shadows under the olive tree that made me want to immortalize the moment.

The Berkshire Mountains have vistas that never cease to amaze. As I drive north from New York City the play of light on the mountains and the homes, under the clouds and sky delight me. The show is never the same so I look forward to the next bend in the road. Conversely there are views that I go back to over and over again. The old farmhouse in Shaker Meadows, painted in mid-July in the western Berkshires surrounded by colorful flowers and lit by the sun is dramatic, and quite alive. I was challenged capturing the light filtering through the old glass windows and the cast shadows on the old building. The mountains whether in the cold still of winter or an early morning sunrise have their own unique lightshow.

I return to Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine to capture the remarkable views that the very special light of the island creates whether it is a bright sunny day or a misty one. There is something eternal and healing about the colors and light of Monhegan.

Portrait painting and snow paintings are my new interests.  To evolve and change is my aim and I wish to take you on the journey with me.
